Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.
The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
