Lando Norris just pipped team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the fastest time in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the points lead from his teammate by one point after his victory in Mexico City a fortnight back, beat the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before sprint qualifying scheduled for 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, sitting 36 points Norris, finished in P17 as his Red Bull team opted for a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, if briefly, when he spun at corner four during the early running. Tsunoda slid over the track edges before sliding over the gravel trap, and was blessed to get away with just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also spun, at the final moments of the session, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho corner before the final bend on to the main straight. The veteran wrapped up in P19, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
